Welcome to the Homepage for NAVSC 101.
Formal interviews with the freshman advisor, LT Cena, for all freshmen midshipmen will, at a minimum, be held during the first two weeks of the semester and again after midterm exams.
All midshipmen are expected to keep abreast of the NROTC unit’s professional reading boards and Plan of the Week (POW). Ignorance is no excuse!
Course Description
This curriculum is designed to introduce midshipmen and interested university personnel to the organization of the naval service, the various career opportunities available, the long held customs and traditions of the Navy, and the duties of today’s junior naval officer.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of the course, the student will have mastered the mission and basic organization of the naval service, the general military information required for a junior naval officer, have some knowledge of the Uniform Code of Military Justice and its applications and comprehend Navy Core values and how they serve as the basis for leadership and ethical behavior. It is not the intent of this course cover each area in great detail but to stimulate student interest and provide a solid foundation on which to build.
Course Procedures
ACADEMICS ARE YOUR NUMBER ONE PRIORITY!
1. Attendance: As specified in the Midshipman Regulations, "unexcused absences from classes are not authorized". If there is a specific reason that requires you to be excused from class, follow the procedures in Midshipman Regulations para. 208.
2. Missing a homework assignment or exam without prior notification will result in receiving no credit. Midshipmen are responsible for all class material regardless of absence.
3. All midshipmen will be in proper civilian attire or uniform (as required).
4. Variations to these procedures will be considered on a case-by-case basis, provided I am informed of the situation prior to class or as soon as possible after if prior notification is not possible.
Assignments
1. Reading: Students are expected to complete the required reading assignment prior to the class period covering that lesson as per the syllabus.
2. Exams: There will be two midterm exams given during class hours and will only cover previous material. The final exam will be given on the last day of class and will be cumulative.
3. Quizzes: There will be five quizzes throughout the semester, all unannounced.
4. Paper: Due 18 October
Topic: Paper will be on any military or international event that currently affects our national security or military service.
Format: 2-3 pages typed, 1-1/2 inches spaced, Font size 12, Times New Roman Font, 1-inch margins, title page (name, section, and due date), and a reference page (MLA style parenthetical reference citations).
Grading: The paper should include a brief background of the situation, what is the significance of the event (how does it affect the military or national security of the United States?), and a conclusion. Your conclusion should reflect your opinion regarding the specific event and your recommendations. Grades will be based on well thought ideas expressed in an orderly and intelligent manner. BE CRITICAL. Always proofread your papers. Do not allow poor grammar and spelling to detract from your work. Using web pages as the sole source of information is unauthorized.
EVIDENCE OF PLAGARISM WILL RESULT IN A GRADE OF 0% FOR THE PAPER – CITE ALL SOURCES PROPERLY!!!!
"Academic honesty is fundamental to the activities and principles of a university. All members of the academic community must be confident that each person’s work has been responsibly and honorably acquired, developed, and presented. Any effort to gain an advantage not given to all students is dishonest whether or not the effort is successful. The academic community regards academic dishonesty as an extremely serious matter, with serious consequences that range from probation to expulsion. When in doubt about plagiarism, paraphrasing, quoting, or collaboration, consult the course instructor."
5. Presentation: At the end of the semester each student will be assigned a naval platform of their choice to present to the class in a 3-5 minute speech.
